Settlement and Social Network of Tai Kheun in Lan Na[1]

Abstract

This report aimed to study the settlement and social network of Tai Kheun. Tools for data collection were observation form, guidelines for in-depth interview, and guidelines for focus group discussion. The key informants consisted of those who were endowed with knowledge and understanding or had informative data on the Tai Kheun ethnic group. The research area is in Chiang Mai Province, consisting of Wat Nantharam community, Wat Tha Kradat community, Wat Simaram community, Ban Ton Haen Noi community, and Wat Chailanka community. Data collection was split into three periods: studying documents and research work concerned, field data collection, and checking the obtained data.  The issues were classified through content analysisand concludedinto categories. The study results showed that the settlement of the migrants in the first period was found in different places in the neighborhood of the river valleys or close to the water sources in order to use water for agriculture. The settlement pattern was scattered and semi-grouping. Later when the settlement was developed resulting in the farmland decreased, and the farmland had becomeresidential area and trade center. As a consequence, the settlement pattern belonged to cluster form. Most of the Tai Kheun had social network emerged from the inside of their community to create the unity in doing business together, helping each other, solving community problem, and establishing network with the support of government sector
